Hiking in a Blizzard with Ducks and Soccer Balls (Oh, and Foxes): Fairfax County First Hike, Woodglen Lake

Okay, gather ’round, fellow adventurers, because I’m here to tell you about the most outrageous, nonsensical hike I’ve ever had the pleasure of experiencing. It’s a tale of frozen toes, feathered friends, and a nearly aquatic soccer ball, all set against the backdrop of a January 1st Fairfax County “snowstorm” that wouldn’t quit. Buckle up, it’s gonna get wild.

All adorable

First things first, let’s establish the insanity threshold: it’s New Year’s Day, the temperature is hovering around 40°F, and it’s SNOWING. Snowing! In July! Okay, fine, in January. But not the soft, fluffy January snow you dream of building snowmen with. This was the first snow of the winter this year. While windy, it was lightly falling and the geese didn’t seem to mind. Undeterred, of course, I grabbed my trusty hiking boots, layered up like a human onion, and dragged my family (bless their patient souls) out to Woodglen Lake Trail.

Now, Woodglen isn’t exactly the Grand Canyon. It’s a charming little 50-acre park with a dam, a lake, and a trail that’s about as subtle as a glitter bomb. You start on a paved path, feeling all civilized and stuff, but then it’s like the trail goes, “Hold my beer,” and quickly transitions to crushed gravel, boardwalks, and fun stone hops. Don’t get me wrong, it’s super kid-friendly (just maybe not stroller-friendly, unless you’re one of those Hercules moms who can deadlift a double stroller). But for wheelchairs, not going to work on the trail alongside the lake. You can absolutely use a wheelchair/stroller from Fireside Court to the top of the dam. There is a steep incline, but it is doable.

But hey, that’s part of the fun, right? The element of surprise, the potential for a faceplant into a pile of leaves. And speaking of unexpected encounters, let’s talk about the wildlife. We weren’t exactly trekking through the Amazon, but Woodglen had its own furry (and feathery) cast of characters. We saw a sly fox, probably scoping out his next snack (hopefully not me), a gaggle of gossiping ducks (they definitely had something to say about our questionable fashion choices), and enough crows to hold a murder trial. And, yes, there were geese too, because nature apparently has a quota for loud honking to fill.

Speaking of ball control, let’s talk about the near-death experience of our beloved soccer ball. We made it past the paved dam section, feeling smug and superior, when BAM! This little creek appears, all rocks and rushing water. Now, normally I’m pretty good at navigating these things, but with the snow slicking everything up and the wind trying to knock me into the next county, well, let’s just say things got a little dicey. My foot slipped, the ball went flying, and for a horrifying moment, I envisioned it doing a graceful swan dive into the murky depths. But fear not, my friends, I lunged like a ninja (okay, maybe a slightly clumsy ninja) and snagged that ball out of midair. Victory was mine, and the soccer ball lived to see another day.

So, there you have it. A hike that was equal parts hilarious, challenging, and slightly insane. We finished (mostly) dry, (mostly) warm, and with a renewed appreciation for hot cocoa and indoor activities. Would I do it again? Absolutely!

Anyway, if you’re looking for a quirky, slightly sketchy, and surprisingly wildlife-packed adventure, Woodglen Lake Trail is your jam. Just don’t wear white, bring your sense of humor, and maybe leave the soccer ball at home. Unless you have ninja reflexes, of course. In that case, go for it, and tell those crows I said hello.

P.S. If you see a fox wearing a tiny soccer ball scarf, that’s probably mine. Don’t judge.

Here is the Gaia info from the hike.
